Ideas are light: a title and a few lines, in conversation with what is current. Projects are the showcase unit: the decision, the measurement, one image — and the reading under the lens. Every entry has two layers.
the surface says what; the lens says why.
ideas — light · nine, in three groups
Three groups of questions. One lens.
01 — institutions · the rules under the outcomes
RESOURCES ↔ RULES
Rich ground, poor rules
I grew up in a country with a great deal in the ground that struggles anyway. Institutions decide what the ground is worth.
inclusive vs extractive is not a moral label. it is a different payoff table for whoever holds the pen.
MERCANTILISM → INDUSTRY → ?
The eras of thinking
Each era changes the question wealth is asked. Gold, then output. The next question is unwritten.
the hidden variable in every era is who sets the parameter of thinking — the filter that decides which question counts.
PARETO ↔ THE HIDDEN SYSTEMS
The vital few doors
Of everything that happened in my first decade in Canada, three or four doors did most of the work.
the counterfactual is the whole argument, and it is the one column no dataset holds.
02 — incentives · the hidden layer
POSITION ↔ HORIZON
Survival mode
People in survival mode make short-sighted decisions — not because they are short-sighted, but because the position is.
a high discount rate is not a character flaw. it is the price of a future you cannot count on.
CAPITAL ↔ LABOUR
Growth without growing
The economy can be growing while individuals are not. Both are true at once; the gap has a mechanism.
growth is a sum, and a sum has no idea who it happened to. split it by capital and labour and the same number becomes two lives.
ENOUGH ↔ THE HOURS AFTER
Enough
Everyone should be able to reach enough: a decent life, a retirement, the occasional vacation. Past that, time is the wealth.
past enough, the marginal unit buys less than the marginal hour. that is where economics hands the question to philosophy.
03 — instruments · what the tools show, and what they miss
DIMINISHING RETURNS ↔ ENGLISH
The first thousand words
The first thousand English words changed my life; the last thousand changed almost nothing. The curve flattens where the accent stays.
marginal word, marginal value: past that point you are not buying words — you are buying the first try.
TRADE ↔ ENVIRONMENT
The Great Symbiosis
Trade and the environment are negatively compatible — but not as a fixed law. It depends on which regime you are in.
second best: when one distortion already exists, removing another can make things worse. the fitted line's real job is to tell you which regime you are in.
THE INPUT NOBODY COUNTS
Time to think
"Time to think is a unique luxury that we don't think much about." No account holds it; every life is priced by it.
ε — everything the model cannot hold. time to think lives there, with the doors I never saw.
projects — the showcase unit
Three plates. One is open.
Each unit is the decision, the measurement, one image of the work, and — under the lens — the reading: the mechanism under the number, in the economist's words.

Toronto Animal Shelter Analytics
An adoption-outcome analysis of Toronto’s shelter data — the original portfolio project, now being rewritten as a proper case study with the methodology on the page.

the visual
the reading — analysis that starts from a life, not a dataset: the house pattern, proven once.
